How to Throw a Frightfully Fun Halloween Party 🎃

Halloween is one of our favorite excuses to throw a party.

The costumes. The decorations. The ridiculous amount of candy. And, of course, watching your friends and coworkers suddenly become very committed to staying in character all night.

Whether you’re planning a Halloween party at home, a corporate celebration, a school event, a fundraiser, or a community gathering, you don’t need to spend a fortune to make it memorable.

Here are some of our favorite ways to bring the fun.

How to Throw a Frightfully Fun Halloween Party 🎃

If you want to take your Halloween digital photos to the next level, that’s where Boom comes in.

1. Pick a Theme

Instead of simply saying “Halloween party,” give guests a theme to play with.

Try:

Hollywood Horror — red carpet meets spooky season.

Haunted Prom — bad formalwear strongly encouraged.

Decades of Horror — pick a spooky look from any decade.

Classic Monsters — vampires, witches, ghosts, zombies, and more.

Anything But Yourself — guests come dressed as absolutely anything they want.

A theme also makes decorating much easier because you have a clear direction.

Give people good music, something to eat, something fun to do, and permission to be a little ridiculous.

That’s usually where the best memories happen.

 2. Create a DIY Halloween Photo Spot

You don’t need an elaborate setup to create a fun photo spot.

Hang black fabric or an old sheet as a backdrop and add paper bats, fake cobwebs, pumpkins, thrifted picture frames, or string lights.

Put a basket nearby filled with silly props.

Then encourage everyone to take pictures throughout the night.

If you want to take your Halloween digital photos to the next level, that’s where Boom comes in.

You don’t necessarily need special Halloween recipes. Sometimes you just need funny names.

 3. Give Regular Food a Spooky Makeover

You don’t necessarily need special Halloween recipes. Sometimes you just need funny names.

Popcorn becomes Monster Munch.

Guacamole becomes Witch’s Brew.

Pasta becomes Worms.

Brownies become Graveyard Bites.

Add handwritten spooky labels and suddenly your regular party food has joined the theme.

 4. Shop Your House Before Buying Decorations

Before filling your cart with Halloween decorations, look around your house.

For example:

  • Old jars can become candleholders.

  • Sheets can become ghosts.

  • Cardboard can become tombstones.

  • Branches from outside can become creepy centerpieces.

And don’t underestimate what dim lighting and a few strategically placed cobwebs can do.

Bonus points for borrowing decorations or finding them secondhand. It saves you money and the planet. Here are some great ideas and tips for DIY Halloween decorations.

 5. Have a Costume Contest – But Make the Categories Fun

“Best Costume” is great, but adding unexpected categories gets more people involved.

Try:

🏆 Most Creative

😂 Funniest Costume

😱 Scariest

♻️ Best DIY Costume

👯 Best Group Costume

🤯 “How Did You Even Think of That?” Award

Have guests vote during the party and announce the winners toward the end of the night.

At Boom Photo Booth, we love photo booths because they give people a reason to interact.

 6. Give People Something to DO

The secret to a great party isn’t necessarily more decorations.

It’s interaction. Add a Halloween trivia game, costume contest, spooky scavenger hunt, dance challenge, pumpkin decorating station, or, yes, a photo booth.

At Boom Photo Booth, we love photo booths because they give people a reason to interact.

Someone takes one sensible digital photo.

Then someone grabs a prop.

Then five coworkers jump in.

And suddenly you have the photo everyone is talking about the next morning.

 7. Create a Halloween Candy Bar

Fill bowls or jars with different candies and let guests create their own take-home mix.

You can even ask people to bring their favorite childhood Halloween candy and see which disappears first. For less waste, use reusable bowls, jars, scoops, and paper treat bags.

 8. Don’t Forget the Playlist

Music can completely change the atmosphere.

Mix Halloween classics with dance-floor favorites rather than playing spooky music all night.

And yes, Monster Mash is practically mandatory.

 9. Capture the Night

Everyone puts so much effort into Halloween costumes, and then the night is over in a flash.

Take the pictures.

Take the group shots.

Get the ridiculous ones.

And don’t forget the person who spent three hours on their makeup.

Whether it’s a DIY photo corner or a full Boom Photo Booth experience, give your guests a way to capture the night.

Most Important: Don’t Take Halloween Too Seriously

The decorations don’t need to be perfect.

The costumes don’t need to be expensive.

And the party doesn’t need to look like something created for social media.

Give people good music, something to eat, something fun to do, and permission to be a little ridiculous.

That’s usually where the best memories happen.

And if you want us there to capture those memories?

Bring the costumes. We’ll bring the BOOM. 👻📸
